Jan Oskar Hansen is a poet, storyteller and Seafarer, born in 1938 in Stavanger, Norway. He joined the merchant navy at 15 and spent most of his life at sea until settling in the early 1990s in Portugal. His poetry has been widely published in hard copy and online, worldwide. Literary critics have generally commented that a love and honoring of living things stands out in Hansen's work, and deep humility; that it reveals with unflinching honesty man's shortcomings in his efforts to love, telling what there is to tell in a first person, deeply resident universal voice (J. McCormick, Sr. Ed. World's Strand). In reviewing Hansen's collection, End of a Voyage, literary critic Adam Donaldson Powell (Norway) writes, "Jan Oskar Hansen exemplifies immense personal and artistic maturity. I have elsewhere written about Hansen’s genius as regards the art of storytelling, and this work is no exception." (Review) Interviewing Hansen, Dr. Amitabh Mitra describes Hansen as "...a conjurer of symbiosis, a weaver of magical words and images, passion and pathos that have stood the test of time." (Interview) Hansen is a popular poet, not an academic; he writes poetry that "sticks to the ribs," as Joseph Sobran puts it in "The Case for Popular Poetry".

The poet is widely read and fluent in several languages, knowledge often acquired at night during his many years at sea. He chose to write primarily in English following enthusiastic reception of his work from English-speaking editors and readers. He also writes in Norwegian and Portuguese and his poetry is translated into French and Spanish.

Books
"Jan Oskar Hansen is widely regarded as one of the greatest contemporary poets. It is most clear that he is an outstanding poet whom it is impossible not to hear. The most impressive thing about these poems is their original voice, energy, passion and power of vivid description. His poems are distinguished by their technical mastery, significance and strength. He has wit and erudition."

"Jan Oskar Hansen is most convincing and admirable in this collection. In the intensity of his imagination, we reach the climax of his poetic life. His intuitive complexity is revealed in concrete images or words. The myriad subtleties of his thought are truly amazing. The noble cadence and chiseled phrases of Jan’s poetry are remarkable. Jan Oskar Hansen is one of the greatest poets the modern world has known."

"Jan Oskar Hansen s genius is unlimited. He has incomparably excelled most of the contemporary poets. This is the work of Hansen at his best. Only a few poets have such bold, such copious imagination. Hansen s poetry is miraculous for the depth of his philosophic insight. The rich and copious diction, innovative application of images and phrases, the structural capability and unique command over all the intricacies of feelings raise him quite immensely above his contemporaries. Jan Oskar Hansen is the king of the unique poetic rhythm and style." (From Cyberwit.net, Editors)
